Pain Management in Old Age

The aches and pains that elderly go through is not the pain that a youngster or middle-age man faces. The pain that older people often live with is acute and chronic, somewhat unbearable. Younger ones often do not understand why their senior family member is moving slow or sighing in pain.

Although treatment for old age pains are available, many do not know about the treatments and possible cures. This Senior Citizens Day blog underlines some of the common pains that dash and daunt oldsters leaving them in severe pain -

Lower Back Pain

It’s common for any elderly person to have paining lower back. Many a people in late thirties and early forties also struggle with this problem. Some of the causes of lower back pain in old age are –

  • Slip disc or some other disc deformity
  • Herniated disc
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Joint dysfunction
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Compression
  • Fracture
  • Back/spinal injury in younghood
  • Wrong or overdoing workouts


According to medical science, in most cases, headache is an outcome of weakened vision. Our eye sight and muscles turn weaker, causing headaches and restlessness. Additionally, some elderly individuals suffer from migraine, nausea, and chronic headache. Some of the typical reasons of headache in old age are –

  • Muscle tension or tension in veins around eyes
  • Dehydration
  • Stress
  • Weather changes
  • Weakness
  • Reading
  • Watching television or using phone for prolonged hours


People in 60 to 70 age group are often a victim of this painful condition. There is a protective cartilage between joints and bones of hands, knees, and hips. When this cartilage tears down, it initiates a pain in the associated joints. Severe pain, redness, loss of flexibility, sensation, and itching are common symptoms of osteoarthritis.


The following are the reasons why the protective cartilage between bones and joints breaks –

  • Old age
  • Obesity
  • Injuries
  • Genetics
  • Abnormal bone structure

In the language of medical science, joint pain is labelled as arthritis. However, non-arthritis joint pains are also evident in old age. Therefore, it is important to get your pain diagnosed to ensure the right treatment.

Pelvic Pain

Studies suggest that 1 in every 5 women belonging to above 60 age group suffers from sharp, hard-hitting, chronic pelvic pain. However, most of them do not take it seriously. Causes of pelvic pain in elderly women are –

  • Inflammation
  • Appendicitis
  • Peritonitis
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Constipation

However, pelvic pain is not just limited to women; it irks elderly males as well. The terminology for pelvic pain in men is “Prostatitis”. Here are the causes of pelvic pain in older men –

  • Bladder, bowel, or prostate inflammation
  • Muscle injury
  • Joint injury
  • Inactivity
  • Wrong workouts

Muscle Strain

The fiber content in our muscle becomes less dense and less flexible because of aging. Getting strains becomes easy in that condition. Every decade of your life increases your chances getting muscle injuries. Other symptoms of muscle pain are – sudden pain, swelling, soreness, slow/limited movement, stiffness, and weakness in muscle.

Why your Muscle Strains in Old Age-

  • Sudden physical activity, like coming out from bed or chair
  • Lack of flexibility
  • Wrong workouts
  • Overdoing workouts
  • Slipping or losing control over body movement
  • Running
  • Pulling or pushing heavy objects
  • Wrong posture
