Any injury or damage to any part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal which causes changes in sensation, strength, other body functions at the site of injury. The lowest regular part of your spinal cord is referred to as the neurological level of your damage. The severity of the injury is often called "the completeness" and is classified as either of the following:

  • Complete- If all feeling (sensory) and all abilities to control movement (motor function) are lost below the spinal cord, it is called complete.
  • Incomplete- If you have some motor or sensory function below the affected area, your injury is called incomplete. There are varying degrees of incomplete injury.


  • Trauma caused due to accidents
  • Violent attack or stabbing at spine
  • Damage caused to spine falling from heights
  • Electric shocks or accidents
  • Severe twisting of waistline


  • Discomfort in walking or performing daily activities
  • Loss of bladder or bowels controls
  • An extreme feeling of numbness or tingling
  • Unconsciousness or a headache
  • stiffness in the back or neck area followed by pain
